Boerenbridge, also known as Chinese Pooping in Flanders, is a captivating card game that combines strategy, prediction, and a bit of luck. Let's dive into the rules and scoring system of this engaging game.
Objective
The primary goal of Chinese Pooping is to accurately predict and achieve the number of "strokes" (or tricks) you can win in each round. The player with the highest total points at the end of the game emerges as the winner.
Game Setup and Play
Dealing Cards: The game starts with one card dealt to each player in the first round. Each subsequent round increases by one card, up to a maximum based on the number of players (e.g., 10 cards per player with five players). After reaching the maximum, the number of cards dealt decreases back to one per player.
Bidding: Players, starting from the left of the dealer, predict how many strokes they expect to win. The highest bidder determines the trump suit for that round. Importantly, the dealer, who bids last, must not choose a number that would make the total equal to the number of cards dealt in that round. For example, if seven cards are dealt and the first three players bid 0, 3, and 2 strokes respectively, the dealer cannot bid 2 strokes because 0 + 3 + 2 + 2 would equal 7.
Playing the Round: Players take turns playing cards, with the highest card in the lead suit winning the stroke unless trumped. The winner of each stroke leads the next one.
Scoring
Points for Accurate Prediction: If a player accurately predicts the number of strokes they win, they earn points equal to the number of strokes they predicted. For example, predicting and winning 3 strokes earns 3 points.
Penalty for Inaccurate Prediction: If a player's prediction is off, they lose points equal to the absolute difference between their prediction and the actual number of strokes won. For instance, predicting 3 strokes but winning only 2 results in a loss of 1 point.
Game Rounds: The game progresses through rounds, increasing and then decreasing the number of cards dealt, until the final round where each player receives one card. The cumulative score across all rounds determines the winner.
