Borderlands-Fans warten sehnsüchtig auf das vierte Kapitel der beliebten Plünderer-Shooter-Reihe. Frühe Trailer zeigten bedeutende Fortschritte, darunter erweiterte Skalierungs- und Erkundungsoptionen. Es ist jedoch wichtig zu beachten, dass Borderlands 4 kein vollständig Open-World-Spiel ist.

Der Mitbegründer von Gearbox Software, Randy Pitchford, stellte klar, dass er es vermeidet, Borderlands 4 als „offene Welt“ zu bezeichnen, und verwies auf Konnotationen, die für das Design des Spiels unpassend seien. Während Pitchford die spezifischen Unterschiede nicht näher erläuterte, betonte er die Ausgewogenheit des Spiels zwischen geführten Gameplay-Sequenzen und freier Erkundung.

Dennoch ist Borderlands 4 auf dem besten Weg, das bislang größte Entry der Franchise zu werden und eine nahtlose Durchquerung aller erforschbaren Gebiete zu ermöglichen. Die Entwickler haben sich darauf konzentriert, die riesige Spielwelt zu strukturieren, um zielloses Umherirren zu verhindern und ein durchgängig fesselndes und aufregendes Erlebnis zu gewährleisten.
