Dominoes, or dominos, is a classic board game played with rectangular tiles known as "dominoes." These tiles are part of a set, often referred to as a deck, pack, or simply a set of dominoes. A traditional Sino-European set comprises 28 pieces, each featuring a line that divides its face into two square ends, marked with spots or left blank. These gaming pieces are versatile, similar to playing cards or dice, allowing for a variety of games. Extended sets, such as double 9 and double 12, cater to games like Mexican train and Chicken Foot. Each country boasts its own favorite dominoes games: England enjoys Muggins (All fives), Scandinavian countries play Bergen, Mexico loves Mexican train, and Spain plays Matador.

The origins of dominoes trace back to the Song Dynasty in China, with the game reaching Italy in the 18th century. The evolution from Chinese to modern dominoes remains a mystery, but the game's global appeal is undeniable.

General Rules of Dominoes:

Blocking Game:

The simplest dominoes variant is a two-player game using a double six set. The 28 tiles are shuffled face down to form the stock or boneyard. Each player draws seven tiles, and the remainder are unused. Players place their tiles on-edge to keep their values hidden from opponents. The game starts with one player laying down a tile, which varies by game: in Muggins, it's the highest double (6-6); in Bergen, it's 0-0; and in Mexican train, it's the next lower double each round. Players take turns extending the line of play by matching tile ends. The game ends when a player plays their last tile or when the game is blocked, with the player causing the block scoring the remaining points.

Scoring Game:

Points are scored during gameplay for specific configurations or moves. In Muggins (All fives), players score when the open ends of the layout sum to multiples of five. In Bergen, points are scored when the open ends match. If a player fails to call "domino" before laying a tile and another player calls it afterward, the first player must draw an extra tile. In Mexican train, the double zero domino scores 50 points.

Draw Game:

In the draw game, players can draw tiles from the stock before playing. The game's score is calculated from the pips in the losing player's hand plus those in the stock, with typically two tiles left in the stock. This game is often simply called "dominos."
