Each player begins with a hand of 5 cards, a pay-off pile of 20 cards, and 4 empty side stacks at their disposal. The excitement unfolds on a shared table featuring 3 empty center stacks and a stock pile brimming with the remaining cards.
The ultimate goal? Be the first to empty your pay-off pile and claim victory over your opponent. The center stacks are the battleground where you build sequences starting from an ace and moving upwards, regardless of suit. Picture this: you start with the ace of diamonds, then play the two of spades, followed by the three of hearts, and so on. Kings add a thrilling twist, acting as wild cards. When you play a king, it magically transforms into the card needed to continue the sequence. For example, laying a king of spades on a ten of clubs turns it into a queen!
Once a center stack reaches completion—whether by playing a queen or a king on a jack—it's shuffled back into the stock pile, keeping the game dynamic and unpredictable. Side stacks offer a flexible space where you can place any card, but remember, only the top card is accessible for play.
At the start of your turn, replenish your hand to 5 cards from the stock pile. Your turn offers several strategic moves:
- Play the top card from your pay-off pile onto a center stack.
- Move the top card from one of your side stacks to a center stack.
- Play a card from your hand directly onto a center stack.
- Place a card from your hand onto one of your side stacks, which ends your turn.
The game reaches its climax when one player successfully plays their last card from the pay-off pile onto a center stack, securing a win and earning points equal to the number of cards left in their opponent's pay-off pile. If the stock pile runs dry before this happens, the game ends in a thrilling tie, with no points awarded.
The match concludes when a player reaches a total of 50 points, crowning them the ultimate champion of Spite & Malice!
