The mancala family of board games offers an engaging two-player experience, involving strategic gameplay with small stones, beans, or seeds arranged in rows of holes or pits. These games, such as oware, bao, and omweso, challenge players to capture their opponent's pieces, adding depth and excitement to each match. This implementation brings you a selection of mancala games including kalah, oware, and congkak, all designed for a captivating gaming experience.
The board features 6 small pits, known as houses, on each side, and a large pit, referred to as an end zone or store, at each end. The objective is to outmaneuver your opponent and capture more seeds than they do.
Kalah Rules:
Setup: At the start, four to six seeds are placed in each house.
Control: Each player manages the six houses and seeds on their side, with their score being the number of seeds in the store to their right.
Sowing: Players take turns removing all seeds from one of their houses and sowing them counter-clockwise, dropping one seed per house, including their own store but not the opponent's.
Capturing: If the last sown seed lands in an empty house owned by the player, and the opposite house contains seeds, both the last seed and the opposite seeds are captured into the player's store.
Additional Moves: Landing the last sown seed in the player's store grants an additional move, with no limit on consecutive moves per turn.
Endgame: The game concludes when one player has no seeds left in their houses. The other player then moves all remaining seeds to their store, and the player with the most seeds in their store wins.
Oware Rules:
Setup: Similar to kalah, four to six seeds are placed in each house at the start.
Sowing: On their turn, a player removes all seeds from one house and distributes them counter-clockwise, skipping the house they started from and the end scoring houses.
Capturing: Capturing happens if the final seed sown brings an opponent's house to exactly two or three seeds. These, and potentially other houses, are captured if the previous seeds also brought houses to two or three seeds. Captured seeds go into the player's scoring house.
Compulsory Move: If the opponent has no seeds, the current player must make a move that gives the opponent seeds. If not possible, the player captures all remaining seeds in their territory, ending the game.
Endgame: The game ends when one player captures more than half the seeds, or both players have taken half (resulting in a draw).
