"Abby's Evolution in 'The Last of Us' Season 2: HBO Explores Character Growth"

HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us Part 2 will portray Abby differently than in the game. Showrunner Neil Druckmann explains that actress Kaitlyn Dever didn't need the same physical build as the game's Abby because the show prioritizes drama over moment-to-moment action. The show's Abby will be "physically more vulnerable," but possess a stronger spirit, according to showrunner Craig Mazin. This approach allows for a different exploration of Abby's formidable nature.

The show plans to adapt Part 2 across multiple seasons, unlike Season 1 which covered the first game. Season 2, with seven episodes, will conclude with a "natural breakpoint," leaving room for future seasons.

The negative online reaction to Abby's character in the game is acknowledged. Actress Isabel Merced (Dina) mentions the extra security provided to Kaitlyn Dever due to online harassment directed at the character and even Naughty Dog employees. The production team emphasizes that Abby is a fictional character and the abuse directed toward actors and developers is unacceptable.
