Adopt Multiple Companions in Stardew Valley

Author:Kristen Update:Feb 12,2025

Expand Your Stardew Valley Farm with Multiple Pets!

One of the joys of Stardew Valley farming is the diverse range of animals you can keep. This guide explains how to acquire multiple pets, expanding your farm's furry (or scaly) family beyond just one companion.

Unlocking the Multi-Pet Potential:

Initially, Stardew Valley limited players to a single pet per save. However, the 1.6 update changed that, allowing for multiple animal companions. To unlock this feature, you must first maximize your existing pet's friendship level. Daily care is key: fill their water bowl (except on rainy/snowy days) and pet them to trigger a heart bubble. Monitor their friendship using the "Animals" tab in the pause menu.

A full friendship meter triggers a letter from Marnie, opening the door to adopting additional pets. If you skipped the initial pet adoption, Marnie's letter arrives at the start of Year 2.

Adopting Your New Companions:

After receiving Marnie's letter, visit her shop (9:00 AM - 4:00 PM, closed Mondays and Tuesdays). Choose the "Adopt Pets" option to browse the 12 available Pet Licenses: five cat variations, five dog variations, and two turtle types. Each license requires a significant gold investment.

Grey Cat 40,000g
Orange Cat 40,000g
White Cat 40,000g
Black Cat 40,000g

Essential Pet Supplies:

Before or after adopting, visit Robin's shop to commission Pet Bowls (5,000g and 25 Hardwood each). These are crucial; they serve as your pets' homes and prevent friendship decay. Neglecting them leads to pet abandonment!

Marnie also sells optional decorative items like doghouses and cat trees, but these don't affect friendship.
