My First Adult LEGO Purchase Was This Mario Set and I Have No Regrets

Author:Kristen Update:May 02,2025

As a practical person, my spending habits are generally focused on essentials, with occasional splurges on video games when they're on sale. However, last year marked a departure from this norm when I decided to purchase a LEGO set—something I hadn't considered since childhood. Growing up, I loved building LEGO sets, but as I got older, I moved away from them, partly due to their high cost. Sets linked to popular franchises like movies or video games tend to be pricier, which made me hesitant. It wasn't until I saw the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant on sale for under $50 since October of last year that I decided to take the plunge. I convinced myself that my desk could use a new potted plant.

My interest in the Piranha Plant set was sparked after reading IGN's review. Being a lifelong fan of Mario games, this set felt like the perfect way to showcase my affection for the franchise. While LEGO's botanical collection offers beautiful flower sets, none capture the whimsical terror quite like the Piranha Plant.

Now that I've built it, I'm thrilled to have the Piranha Plant on my desk. It transports me to the Mushroom Kingdom every time I glance at it, imagining I'm tending to my little plant during work hours. The building process was as enjoyable as the final product; it took an afternoon but was challenging enough to keep me engaged. This is my first LEGO Nintendo set, but the experience has me considering adding more to my collection.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on a LEGO Set You Love?

LEGO sets, especially those aimed at adults, can be expensive, often costing over $200. It's tempting to indulge in these sets, but it's important to balance treating yourself with financial responsibility. The LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant, priced under $50, was within my budget and brought me joy both in building and displaying it. That little bit of daily happiness is worth more than $50 to me, but that's the amount I'm comfortable spending.
