Ubisoft's latest addition to the beloved stealth-action open-world series, Assassin's Creed Shadows, has finally arrived, set in 16th-century Japan. With over 30 games released under the Assassin's Creed banner, we're focusing solely on the mainline entries here—no mobile, side-scrolling, VR, or spin-offs like Bloodlines or Liberation. Since its inception in 2007, when Desmond Miles first entered the Animus as Altaïr, the series has evolved significantly. Now, with Assassin's Creed Shadows, players take control of Naoe and Yasuke, marking the 14th installment in the core series. But where does it stand among its predecessors?

I've taken the liberty of ranking the mainline Assassin's Creed games based on my personal enjoyment, using an IGN Tier List. Take a look at how I've ranked them:

Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag remains my top pick, nestled in the S-tier alongside Assassin’s Creed 2. Black Flag's blend of island exploration, ship combat, and a vibrant cast delivers what I believe to be the quintessential Assassin's Creed experience. Assassin's Creed 2 is credited with propelling the series into the mainstream, and it still holds up remarkably well. In the A-tier, you'll find Valhalla, which might surprise some due to its expansive nature, but I thoroughly enjoyed its Viking-themed combat and the addictive Orlog minigame. Joining it is Unity, whose breathtaking recreation of Revolutionary France continues to impress even a decade on.
