*Avowed* features five distinct Backgrounds, each offering unique dialogue options and a starting weapon. Importantly, all Backgrounds can utilize every piece of equipment and ability available in the game. The five Backgrounds are: Arcane Scholar, Court Augur, Noble Scion, Vanguard Scout, and War Hero. Let's delve into the narrative implications of each:

Arcane Scholar: This Background paints your character as an academic, with a history tied to the prestigious Bragganhyl Academy. Your character authored a controversial treatise on soul lineages, leading to your arrest by a local lord. However, the emperor saw potential in you and enlisted your services in the imperial court archives. Arcane Scholars are well-versed in the occult, legal precedents, historical observations, and even poetry, offering rich dialogue options rooted in intellectual pursuits.

Court Augur: With a tragic backstory, Court Augurs are often misunderstood, accused of witchcraft after their village's crops failed and their mystical insights aroused suspicion. Fleeing to Highcrown, they were taken under the emperor's wing as his personal mystic. Court Augurs connect deeply with the spiritual realm, providing dialogue options that resonate with magic and the divine. This Background is ideal for players who wish to immerse themselves in the role of a wizard and connect with the companion Giatta.

Noble Scion: Noble Scions represent the Living Lands' version of a fallen noble. Born into wealth and influence but marred by family scandal, they sought refuge and mercy from the emperor. As valuable allies to the empire, Noble Scions are perfect for players who wish to remain loyal and serve the empire's interests throughout their journey in the Living Lands.

Vanguard Scout: Originally spared from execution, Vanguard Scouts embrace a humble life away from the complexities of city and politics, preferring the wilderness. Their skills in tracking and espionage make them invaluable to the empire. This Background suits players who want to role-play as a hunter and connect more deeply with the companion Marius.

War Hero: War Heroes earned their place among elite warriors after quelling a violent Skaenite uprising. Their loyalty and resilience make them crucial to the emperor. This Background is ideal for players looking to embody a warrior archetype and forge a strong bond with the companion Kai.
