Llama Habitats

Savanna — This warm, grassy biome with acacia trees is a common place to spot llamas mingling with horses and donkeys.

Windswept Hills and Forest — In these rarer, mountainous areas, llamas often graze in small herds of 4 to 6, making them ideal for creating a caravan, as we'll discuss later.

You can also always find llamas accompanying wandering traders.

Appearance & Behavior

Llamas come in four main coat colors: white, gray, brown, and beige. They are neutral mobs, meaning they won't attack unless provoked. However, they will defend themselves from players or hostile mobs with a unique spit attack.

How to Use Llamas

Llamas are excellent pack animals. By equipping one with a chest, you can store valuable resources, which is perfect for long expeditions. You can also link multiple llamas into a caravan to massively increase your carrying capacity.

For a personal touch, you can decorate your llamas with colorful carpets, adding a vibrant look to your caravan. Additionally, their spit attack can harass hostile mobs, providing you with a brief distraction in a fight.

How to Tame a Llama

To gain a llama's trust and make it your companion, you must tame it. Unlike horses, they don't require a saddle, but you also can't steer them directly. Follow these simple steps.

Step 1: Locate Them

Search in savanna or windswept hill biomes. They often spawn in groups, allowing you to tame several at once.

Step 2: Mounting

Approach a llama and right-click (or use the interact button) to mount it. It will buck you off repeatedly. Keep trying until you see hearts appear above its head, signaling a successful tame.

Step 3: Use a Lead

While you can't ride a llama, you can lead it with a leash. A tamed llama on a lead will cause other nearby llamas to follow it, automatically forming a caravan. This is their key feature, turning them into a mobile storage train.

How to Equip a Llama with a Chest

The process is straightforward. Simply hold a chest and use it on a tamed llama.

The chest provides a random number of inventory slots, up to a maximum of 15. Be aware that this is permanent; the chest cannot be removed. To access the inventory, crouch and press the interact button on the llama.

Forming a caravan is easy. Attach a lead to your primary tamed llama, and any other llamas within roughly 10 blocks will line up behind it. You can have a caravan of up to 10 llamas.

Beyond utility, llamas can be customized for decoration using carpets.

How to Put a Carpet on a Llama

Select a carpet in your hand and right-click on the tamed llama. Each carpet color creates a unique pattern on the llama's back, letting you personalize your pack animals.
