Bethesda Game Studios has shed light on why Virtuos’ newly released The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is not considered a remake. In a detailed post on X/Twitter, the studio behind the iconic fantasy RPG series clarified the distinction between a remaster and a remake, emphasizing their approach to the project. Bethesda expressed gratitude to both new and returning players, stating firmly, "We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology."
This clarification comes as fans get their first official look at Oblivion Remastered and begin to experience it firsthand. The game is now available, featuring significant visual enhancements and several key gameplay adjustments. Notable updates include the introduction of sprinting and a revamped level-up system, which blends elements from both the original Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.
Despite the extensive modifications, ranging from new designs for minor elements like sewer grates to major gameplay additions, many players feel that Oblivion Remastered resembles a remake more than a simple visual upgrade. While the last decade has seen numerous remasters that primarily focus on minor visual enhancements, Bethesda remains cautious about labeling their 2021-started project as a full remake.
"We looked at every part and carefully upgraded it," Bethesda elaborated. "But most of all, we never wanted to change the core. It’s still a game from a previous era and should feel like one."
Bethesda expressed their enthusiasm for both long-time fans revisiting the land of Cyrodiil and newcomers experiencing Oblivion for the first time. They conveyed their appreciation for the ongoing support from their community, hoping that "no matter who you are, when you step out of the Imperial sewer – you feel like you’re experiencing it for the first time."
