Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot Will See Classic Characters Return — Even if They're Dead, Sarah Michelle Gellar Says

Play"The new series will have a more upbeat tone compared to the final seasons of the original," Gellar said. "We're aiming for a blend of fresh storylines and familiar faces, while honoring the show's legacy. My ideal would be to welcome back every character who’s passed, but we also need room for new narratives to unfold."

Gellar's remarks mark the first official indication that beloved original characters might return alongside her, and the idea of deceased figures making a comeback adds exciting new dimensions to the reboot.

While major character deaths were uncommon during the original series, later seasons featured the tragic demise of fan-favorite witch Tara, and the show's finale saw former demon Anya meet her end.

The spin-off series Angel saw many of its characters meet their end, including several who originated in Buffy. Cheerleader-turned-seer Cordelia died in later episodes, and Watcher-turned-rogue demon hunter Wesley was killed in the series finale.

In the Buffy universe, death isn’t a permanent barrier—many actors have returned to portray characters who died, returned as undead beings, or were resurrected. Buffy herself died multiple times across the original run, and several of her closest companions (including romantic partners) became vampires.

Gellar recently shared a video with her former co-star Alyson Hannigan, who portrayed Willow, dispelling online rumors of a rift between them. Fans speculated this might signal Willow’s return, though no official confirmation has been given.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer originally aired from 1997 to 2003, starring Gellar, Hannigan, Nicholas Brendon as Xander, Charisma Carpenter as Cordelia, David Boreanaz as Angel, and Anthony Stewart Head as Giles. The series was created by Joss Whedon, who is not involved in the reboot.
