Home > News > We Build LEGO Vincent van Gogh - Sunflowers, Which Contains a Hidden Surprise for Art Lovers
The first thing to know about this build is its impressive size. Standing at 21 inches high and 16 inches wide, it's approximately 60% the size of the original painting, making it large enough to be unwieldy when handling. This LEGO Art Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers set is designed to be taken seriously, not just as a tribute to one of the world's most famous artworks, but as a piece of art itself that deserves a prominent place on your wall. This reflects LEGO's ongoing transformation from an adult curiosity to a respected adult hobby.

Vincent van Gogh painted his renowned Sunflowers series during his time in Arles, France, a period marked by prolific creativity. The sunflower held a deep emotional significance for van Gogh, symbolizing gratitude and serving as his artistic muse. He famously declared in a letter to a friend, "If [Georges] Jeannin has the peony, [Ernest] Quost the hollyhock, I indeed, before others, have taken the sunflower." In August 1888, he created four versions of sunflowers in a vase, and revisited this theme in January 1889 with repetitions of the third and fourth versions.

Of the seven paintings, the fourth version and its two repetitions are the most celebrated. The original fourth version (F454) is displayed at the National Gallery in London, England. One repetition (F457) can be seen at the Sompo Museum of Art in Tokyo, Japan, while the other (F458), noted for its vibrant color composition, resides in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Established in 1973, the Van Gogh Museum collaborated with LEGO to release the LEGO Vincent van Gogh - Sunflowers set, a tribute to the F458 repetition. This set is crafted as a three-dimensional relief, using abstract pieces to mimic van Gogh's distinctive thick brushstrokes.
When you open the box, you'll find 34 numbered bags and a printed instruction booklet with a QR code. Scanning this code leads to a podcast exploring van Gogh's inspirations and artistic journey.
The build process is both practical and engaging. First, you construct the painting's frame, which you can lean against a wall while working on the canvas. Once the canvas is complete, you mount it into the frame and secure it with pins, adding a personal touch reminiscent of real-life art staging and presentation. This enhances the set's perceived value and importance.
An intriguing Easter egg is hidden within the canvas construction. Art historians found that van Gogh extended the canvas height with a wooden strip during the painting of F458 to give the sunflowers more space. LEGO cleverly replicates this detail by having builders attach a separate strip to the top of the canvas with pins, using brown bricks to mimic wood. This subtle feature, circled in red in the photo below, is a delightful nod to van Gogh's process, known only to the builder, enhancing the set's exclusivity and personal connection.
Constructing the full-bloom sunflowers can be tedious, yet it mirrors van Gogh's dedication. The repetitiveness is part of the experience, reflecting the artist's meticulous approach. Take breaks to enjoy the process fully; this isn't a set to rush through.
The wilting flowers and those in profile add a unique touch. Initially seeming abstract, these elements make sense when viewed from a distance, revealing stems and leaves in context.
A common question among adult LEGO enthusiasts is, "Where do you display your builds?" For this set, the answer is clear: it belongs on your dining room wall. This set is perfect for those who know exactly where they'll display their finished piece. A week after completing it, I still find joy in discovering new three-dimensional details. This is the first exceptional LEGO set of 2025, and it's highly recommended.
LEGO Vincent van Gogh - Sunflowers, Set #31215, is priced at $199.99 and consists of 2615 pieces. It's available exclusively at the LEGO Store.
