Bungie Teases Marathon Gameplay Reveal Through Cryptic ARG Puzzle

The long wait for new Marathon content is finally over. Bungie has announced a major gameplay showcase for their upcoming PvP extraction shooter, scheduled to air this Saturday, April 12 (or Sunday 13 depending on your timezone).

Fans Decipher Cryptic Clues

Last week's mysterious teaser sparked an online frenzy when eagle-eyed gamers spotted hidden details in the ASCII art puzzle. Sharp observers recognized frames from the original trailer - specifically the Runner sprinting through a corridor - baked into the code.

The community quickly rallied to crack Bungie's alternate reality game. One participant shared what appeared to be an in-universe system alert:

"WHEN WILL HE RETURN ERROR ERROR ERROR HAS OCCURRED... INITIATE EMERGENCY PROTOCOL 7 DATA LOSS IMMINENT"

Global Livestream Times

The collaborative effort paid off, with Bungie confirming the showcase timing:

  • 10 AM PDT (San Francisco)
  • 6 PM BST (London)
  • 3 AM AEST (Sydney, April 13)

Marathon's Troubled Journey

Originally announced in May 2023 as a revival of Bungie's classic franchise, the project maintains its signature eerie atmosphere while transitioning to extraction shooter mechanics. Set on Tau Ceti IV, players assume the role of cybernetic Runners exploring a mysterious abandoned colony.

The development hasn't been smooth sailing. Recent Sony restructuring affected multiple live-service titles, including canceling The Last of Us multiplayer. Bungie itself faced significant layoffs (220 employees in July 2024) and controversy when former Marathon director Chris Barrett departed amid misconduct allegations, later filing a $200 million lawsuit.

Catch the highly anticipated reveal on Bungie's official Twitch channel this weekend.
