Destiny 2's Year of Prophecy: Guardians' Essential Guide

Author:Kristen Update:May 13,2025

Attention, Guardians! Bungie has just announced a thrilling lineup of updates and expansions for Destiny 2 under the banner of "Year of Prophecy." This year promises four significant content releases, comprising two paid expansions and two major updates accessible to all players, both paying and free.

Kicking off the Year of Prophecy is "Rite of the Nine," a free update that reimagines dungeon diving for both veterans and newcomers. Available immediately, this update revisits familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep, introducing unique twists and refreshed weapons, as you reconnect with Orin.

On July 15, the first paid expansion, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, launches, marking the beginning of a multiyear saga involving the enigmatic Nine. This expansion introduces new ally Lodi and brings Warlock Vanguard Ikora into the spotlight. Set on the new destination, Kepler, inspired by the intricate design of Destiny 2's dungeons, players can expect new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.

Simultaneously, on July 15, "major core game innovations" will be introduced, including revamped armor and gear systems for enhanced buildcrafting, and a new activity selection screen called the Portal. This update will offer players the flexibility to choose between various ops—Fireteam, Pinnacle, Crucible, and the newly introduced Solo Ops—tailored for both cooperative and solo play. Additionally, 50 new modifiers will allow for deeper gameplay customization, ensuring continuous new challenges and rewards.

Pre-order bonuses for The Edge of Fate include an instantly unlockable Exotic Ghost and Legendary Emblem. For those looking for more, the Year of Prophecy Edition and Ultimate Edition offer additional content and exclusive items:

On September 9, the "Ash & Iron" update will go live, followed by the second expansion, Destiny 2: Renegades, on December 2. The year concludes with the "Shadow & Order" update on March 3. Destiny 2: Renegades draws inspiration from the Star Wars universe, blending Destiny's unique storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi elements.

These updates and expansions come at a crucial time for Bungie, following significant layoffs in July 2024 and earlier in the year, showcasing their commitment to delivering quality content to the Destiny 2 community.

While Destiny 2 continues to evolve, Bungie is also working on the reboot of the classic franchise, Marathon, revealed in May 2023. Recent hands-on previews suggest that Marathon, set to launch in September, promises to satisfy fans' cravings for Bungie's signature PvP experience.
