Disney recently invited us and a select group into the secret halls of Walt Disney Imagineering to witness their innovative project that aims to bring their founder back to life through Audio-Animatronics for "Walt Disney - A Magical Life." This project, set to celebrate Disneyland's 70th anniversary, promises to be filled with respect, authenticity, and a touch of Disney magic. Scheduled to debut on July 17, 2025, exactly 70 years after Disneyland's opening, the show will take place at Disneyland's Main Street Opera House, inviting guests to step into Walt's office and delve into his story and his transformative impact on entertainment.
Although we did not see the actual Audio-Animatronic of Walt Disney, the insights and plans shared during our visit have filled me with confidence and excitement. Disney's meticulous approach suggests that this ambitious and meaningful project will be executed spectacularly.
During our presentation at Walt Disney Imagineering, we learned about what guests can expect from "Walt Disney - A Magical Life" and why now is the perfect time to bring Walt back to the only Disney Park he ever walked in. Tom Fitzgerald, senior creative executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, emphasized the responsibility of bringing Walt to life through Audio-Animatronics. "We are giving the same care and attention that Walt and his team did with Lincoln many decades ago," he said. The team has collaborated closely with The Walt Disney Family Museum and the archives department, reviewing extensive footage and interviews to ensure an authentic presentation that reflects Walt's timeless message of following dreams and turning setbacks into success.
Jeff Shaver-Moskowitz, executive producer at Walt Disney Imagineering, reiterated their commitment to authenticity, noting the involvement of the Walt Disney Family Museum and members of the Disney and Miller families. "We’re authentically recreating the way Walt used his hands, his expressive eyebrows, and even that glint in his eye," he said. The words spoken by Walt in the show will be his own, compiled from various interviews over the years.
While we did not see the Audio-Animatronic, a life-size model of Walt Disney was revealed, crafted with an astonishing attention to detail. From the bronze casting of his hands to the suit material and grooming products used to replicate his appearance, the model captured Walt's essence perfectly. The model even included skin blemishes, small hairs, and a lifelike glimmer in his eyes, showcasing the innovative techniques used to ensure realism even in close-up views.
The timing of this project aligns with Disneyland's 70th anniversary, advanced technology, and the presence of the right team to honor Walt's legacy. The project has been in development for over seven years, reflecting Disney's dedication to doing it right.
The Walt Disney Family Museum played a crucial role in this project, with director Kirsten Komoroske sharing their involvement and the family's feelings. "Walt was fascinated by technology, and the Imagineers felt their tech had advanced enough to capture him accurately," she explained. The museum donated over 30 items for the exhibit, including artifacts from Walt’s private apartment and awards like his Emmy for 'Walt Disney’s Disneyland' and his Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Komoroske highlighted the exhibit's alignment with the mission of Walt and his daughter Diane to preserve his memory and inspire others. "Diane wanted to show that despite failures, Walt kept going and trying new things," she said, emphasizing the message of perseverance and innovation that the exhibit aims to convey.
The show will feature Walt as he appeared around 1963, during a period when he was at his professional peak. The setting will blend his actual Burbank office with the set used for his TV appearances, filled with Easter eggs like a photo of Abraham Lincoln and Disneyland plans. While the exact content of his speech remains a surprise, Shaver-Moskowitz hinted that Walt will discuss his legacy and share profound thoughts on life's simple virtues and his humble nature.
Disney historian Jeff Kurtti praised the project for offering a way to present Walt's reality, persona, and philosophy to new generations. "This attraction offers a means for new generations to see and understand Walt Disney as a real person," he said, underscoring the project's significance in keeping Walt's ideals alive.
Kurtti also noted that this project is driven by a sincere desire to celebrate Walt's identity and ideals, rather than commercial motives. This sincerity gives hope that "Walt Disney - A Magical Life" will meet its lofty goals, preserving Walt's legacy in a meaningful way for all ages.
As we await the debut of "Walt Disney - A Magical Life," the anticipation and beauty of this process echo Walt's famous quote: "Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world." While the show will be complete, it won't tell the whole story of Walt or each visitor. Instead, it aims to inspire millions to pursue their own dreams, just as Walt did.
