Open Drive, a groundbreaking racing game for mobile devices, has now launched in early access on Android. Developed by the charity organization SpecialEffect in collaboration with Sun & Moon Studios, this game is a testament to inclusive gaming, designed to be accessible to everyone, especially those with physical disabilities.
Open Drive is not just another racing game; it's a platform that adapts to your preferred method of play. Whether you use touch controls, a keyboard and mouse, switch access, or a controller, the game is engineered to be inclusive from the start. Remarkably, players who rely on alternative input methods such as eye gaze can also dive into the excitement of open-world driving on their mobile devices. A standout feature is the mobile-specific eye control, which allows you to steer your vehicle simply by looking left or right using a compatible eye gaze camera. This innovation is a significant stride in accessibility, particularly for those with physical challenges who are often excluded from games that only support touch or gamepad inputs. This feature is available across all four of the game's diverse open worlds: Stunt, Speed, Snow, and Meadow.
Gameplay in Open Drive is incredibly versatile. You can cruise through the worlds collecting orbs at your own pace or chase high scores by executing daring jumps with vehicles like the Roadster, Trickster, or Speedster. The speed settings are customizable, allowing you to tailor your experience to your liking. Check out the early access announcement trailers below to see Open Drive in action:
Open Drive seamlessly auto-detects and adjusts to your chosen control method. It fully supports Switch Access on Android, ensuring a broad range of accessibility options. Each input method offers unique setups: for touch controls, you can choose between 'Precise' and 'Classic' modes, allowing you to steer either by tapping or through directional control with minimal taps. Similarly, there are customized setups for Switch Access, mouse, keyboard, and Android-compatible gamepads/controllers.
Currently available in early access on Android, the full eye control functionality is slated to be complete upon the game's full release later this summer. You can explore Open Drive for free once the complete version is out. For now, you can get a taste of what's to come by checking it out on the Google Play Store.
