Dune: Awakening Developers Explain Sandworm Behavior

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 22,2025

In Dune: Awakening, sandworms are a formidable force of nature, not controllable entities. Unlike in Frank Herbert's novels, where characters could summon worms using thumpers, this mechanic is absent from the game.

Sandworms are independent NPCs, each with programmed patrol routes, schedules, and behaviors. You can't summon a worm to attack enemy bases. However, you might attract a nearby worm's attention by moving through the sand or using a thumper—though this isn't guaranteed.

Riding sandworms, a cornerstone of Freman culture in the books and films, is also not a feature in Dune: Awakening. The developers attribute this omission to considerations from the Dune film franchise.

Future updates may introduce more Fremen-centric content, potentially including sandworm riding. For now, however, this iconic element remains unavailable.

Dune: Awakening launches on PC May 20th, with console versions to follow.
