Exciting news for fans of the Final Fantasy VII series: the third and final installment of the FF7 Remake trilogy is set to launch on the PS5. In an interview with 4Gamer on January 23, 2025, the game's producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that FF7 Remake Part 3 will be available on the PS5, putting any concerns about its platform to rest.
PlayStation enthusiasts can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that FF7 Remake Part 3 will continue the tradition of the series on the PS5. Kitase reassured fans during the interview, stating, "No, you can rest assured about the next one (FF7 Remake Part 3)." As the PS5 is currently mid-cycle, there's speculation about the trilogy potentially transitioning to the PS6 in the future, though details about the PS6 remain scarce.
While Square Enix has kept the release date under wraps, development on FF7 Remake Part 3 has been progressing smoothly. In an interview with Famitsu on January 23, 2025, Hamaguchi shared, "It’s going very well. We started working on the third game right after FFVII Rebirth ended, and we have a build that will confirm what we should aim for as a game by the end of 2024." He added that the team is on track with their planned schedule, and fans can look forward to a satisfying conclusion. Kitase also expressed his contentment with the story's ending, promising a fulfilling finale for fans.
According to a report from the Washington Post on March 6, 2024, FF7 Remake Part 3 will follow the trend of its predecessors by being a timed exclusive on the PS5. Previous entries in the series, such as FF7 Remake and FF7 Remake Intergrade, were initially exclusive to PlayStation before eventually becoming available on PC. FF7 Rebirth followed a similar pattern, with its PC version released on January 23, 2025, after its initial PS5 exclusivity. It's expected that FF7 Remake Part 3 will also be available on other platforms after its exclusive period on PS5.
Despite the success of the FF7 Remake series, Square Enix reported a decline in HD title sales in their financial results on March 31, 2024. Titles like FF16, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, and FF7 Rebirth contributed to this trend. The company cited increased development costs and advertising expenses as reasons for the operating losses. In response, Square Enix plans to adopt a more aggressive multi-platform strategy, targeting Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs to boost sales. This shift could see more of their HD titles, including future releases, available on a wider range of platforms, despite their strong ties with PlayStation.
