Frostpunk developer 11 bit Studios surprised fans with the announcement of their next game in the series, Frostpunk 1886. On April 24, via a Twitter (X) post, they disclosed that this new title is a remake of the original game, now powered by the Unreal Engine.

The post highlighted that Frostpunk 1886 will include a brand new Purpose Path, long-awaited mod support, and more, all while honoring the legacy of the original. Further details were shared in a Steam post on the same day, where the developers outlined their vision for the project.

11 bit Studios is transitioning from their proprietary Liquid Engine, on which the first game was built, to the more advanced Unreal Engine. After using Unreal Engine 5 for Frostpunk 2, the team recognized the potential for enhancing the original game. "Our goal is to expand upon it with improved visuals, higher resolution, and all the other possibilities Unreal has to offer," they explained.

Eyeing A 2027 Release

Currently in development, Frostpunk 1886 is slated for release in 2027. The developers are dedicated to crafting an experience that welcomes new players to the Frostpunk universe while also satisfying the desires of long-time fans, creating a game that they would love to replay.

The studio also teased the possibility of future DLCs, aiming to deliver new content regularly and not wait another 5+ years between releases. This new approach starts with Frostpunk 1886.
