The Google Pixel series has firmly established itself as one of the top-tier Android smartphone lineups, standing proudly alongside the Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy devices. Since its debut in 2016, Google has consistently refined and enhanced the Pixel experience, delivering flagship models that are celebrated for their performance, camera quality, and clean Android software experience. With so many iterations released over the years—including standard, Pro, a, and Fold variants—it can be tough to keep track of every model. That’s why we’ve put together this comprehensive list of every Google Pixel generation along with their release dates. Whether you're curious about how far the Pixel lineup has come or just looking to refresh your memory, this guide is the perfect place to start.
In total, there have been 17 distinct Google Pixel generations. This count includes all mainline Pixel models and unique variants like the Pixel Fold and Pixel a series. It does not separately list different sizes such as Pro or XL versions unless they represent a major generational shift.
The original Google Pixel set the stage for what would become a highly respected smartphone brand. Released in October 2016, it was among the first smartphones to adopt USB-C and featured a powerful 12.3MP rear camera. The Pixel came in two sizes—Pixel and Pixel XL—with the latter offering a larger screen and improved display quality.
Released just a year after its predecessor, the Pixel 2 introduced optical image stabilization and further refined the camera system. It also marked the controversial removal of the headphone jack, although Bluetooth connectivity issues from the original were addressed.
The Pixel 3 brought thinner bezels and a more modern design language. It offered a slightly larger 5.5-inch display with increased resolution and introduced wireless charging, eliminating the need for constant cable plugging.
As Google's first mid-range Pixel, the Pixel 3a delivered most of the flagship camera features at a lower price point. While it lacked some premium features like water resistance and a high-end processor, it still provided excellent value for budget-conscious users.
This iteration focused on internal upgrades, including a 90Hz display refresh rate and a dual-camera setup featuring 2x optical zoom. RAM was doubled to 6GB, offering smoother multitasking and better overall performance.
The Pixel 4a skipped the 90Hz display but made up for it with significantly improved brightness—peaking at 796 nits—and better battery efficiency, giving users around four extra hours of use compared to the Pixel 4.
Built for endurance, the Pixel 5 packed a 4080mAh battery for extended usage. It also adopted the brighter display tech from the Pixel 4a and added reverse wireless charging, allowing users to charge accessories directly from the phone.
The Pixel 5a offered a slightly larger 6.34-inch display and a beefier 4680mAh battery. However, unlike the Pixel 5, it omitted wireless charging functionality, focusing instead on affordability and battery life.
The Pixel 6 introduced a bold new design with an integrated camera bar and launched at $100 less than its predecessor. Camera enhancements included improved low-light performance, making it one of the best mobile photography tools of its time.
The Pixel 6a scaled back the display refresh rate to 60Hz and reduced RAM to 6GB. Its main camera was downgraded from 50MP to 12.2MP, though it retained the same Tensor chip for consistent performance.
A minor upgrade over the Pixel 6, the Pixel 7 offered refinements like an improved fingerprint sensor, a redesigned camera bar, and better thermal management. While not revolutionary, it was a solid choice for those seeking an updated Pixel experience.
The Pixel 7a brought a 64MP main camera, 90Hz display, and
