HBO Reportedly in Final Talks With John Lithgow to Play Dumbledore in Harry Potter Series

HBO is reportedly in advanced negotiations with acclaimed actor John Lithgow, known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in their upcoming Harry Potter series. While HBO remains tight-lipped, Variety reports that a deal is imminent. This follows earlier speculation in November naming Mark Rylance as a frontrunner for the Dumbledore role.

"We understand the considerable interest surrounding this project and the resulting speculation," an HBO spokesperson stated. "As we progress through pre-production, casting confirmations will be released only upon finalization of contracts."

Lithgow's extensive filmography includes roles in The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Dexter, and The Crown, among numerous other notable performances.

Despite numerous reports indicating progress, the casting process remains largely confidential. HBO is actively seeking actors for the pivotal roles of Harry, Hermione, and Ron, while Paapa Essiedu has reportedly been cast as Severus Snape.

The series will prioritize British talent, mirroring the film adaptations. This is perhaps unsurprising given J.K. Rowling's reported "significant involvement" in the casting process.

Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter series aims to be a comprehensive adaptation of the novels, promising a richer and more detailed narrative than the film series allowed. The series will be helmed by Succession producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, with Mylod also contributing writing credits, having previously worked on Game of Thrones.
