Hollow Knight: Silksong Dev Fuels Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Fever With a Picture of a Chocolate Cake

Author:Kristen Update:Feb 19,2025

Six years have passed since Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania masterpiece, Hollow Knight. Throughout this time, fans have witnessed Silksong's sporadic appearances and disappearances at various gaming events. Even Microsoft seemed to confirm a pre-June 2023 release at one point. The Game Awards came and went without a Silksong announcement. However, could the recently announced Nintendo Switch 2 Direct finally be the platform for its unveiling?

Many fans believe so, and it all stems from a picture of a cake.

Sharp-eyed members of the Hollow Knight subreddit noticed that on January 15th, Team Cherry co-director William Pellen changed his Twitter/X profile picture to a chocolate cake. He tweeted: "something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow."

With rumors circulating about a January 16th Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, the announcement indeed materialized on that day. While many questions remain about the next-gen console, did Pellen subtly hint at the Switch 2 reveal? If so, why?

This is where the Hollow Knight community's speculation intensified. Fans reverse-image searched the cake, tracing it back to a Brooklyn Blackout Cake recipe on Bon Appétit's website. The recipe's publication date: April 2nd, 2024.

The significance? Nintendo confirmed a Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 airing on Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025. Fans theorize Pellen initiated an alternate reality game (ARG) with the tweet and cake image.

The speculation continues. Fans are deciphering Pellen's new X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr. One compelling theory suggests "wr" might be the beginning of a word, possibly referencing a Silksong NPC, the Druid of the Moss Temple. The 15-character handle limit further fuels this theory.

Adding to the mystery, Pellen adopted a new X/Twitter name: little bomey. Fans note a resemblance to a South Australian wine, aligning with Team Cherry's location, though the spelling differs.

It's crucial to remember that Hollow Knight: Silksong's initial announcement confirmed Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch as launch platforms. However, six years later, has Nintendo secured Silksong as a Switch 2 launch title, perhaps as a timed exclusive? Or is this simply fervent speculation from eager fans?

We'll have answers within a few months. Until then, explore all the announcements from Nintendo's Switch 2 reveal.
