Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment Coming to Nintendo Switch 2

Author:Kristen Update:May 08,2025

It wouldn't be a Nintendo console without a Zelda game, and the Nintendo Switch 2 continues this tradition with a surprising twist. During today's Nintendo Direct, we discovered that Koei Tecmo is developing a new Hyrule Warriors title: a prequel to Tears of the Kingdom called Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. This exciting addition to the franchise is set to launch this winter.

Play*Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment* is the latest entry in the Hyrule Warriors series, featuring characters from the ancient history sections of *Tears of the Kingdom*. Alongside Zelda, players will encounter Rauru, Sonia, and other Secret Stone holders. The game delves into Zelda's actions during the events of *Tears of the Kingdom*, where she travels back in time to collaborate with the last remaining Zonai, Rauru, his sister Mineru, and his wife Sonia, in their battle against Ganondorf and his forces.

The trailer showcased the unique abilities of these champions, such as Mineru piloting her mech, Zelda wielding magic, Rauru with his distinctive sword-spear, and brief glimpses of other Sacred Stone wielders.

This marks the third installment in the Hyrule Warriors series, following the original Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which served as a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Age of Calamity offered a fresh take on the Breath of the Wild narrative, and it will be fascinating to see if Age of Imprisonment similarly deviates from expectations. We awarded Age of Calamity a 9/10, praising it as "a joy to play and discover" and "a blast from start to finish."
