Killer Instinct Gold Joins Nintendo Switch Online Library

Author:Kristen Update:May 19,2025

The latest addition to the Nintendo Switch Online library is the iconic Nintendo 64 game, Killer Instinct Gold. This title is a port of the arcade fighter Killer Instinct 2 and now joins its predecessor, the original Killer Instinct, in the expansive collection of retro games available to subscribers of the Online Expansion Pack.

Originally released in 1996, Killer Instinct Gold was crafted by the renowned British studio Rare, known for their collaborations with Nintendo during that era. Rare, responsible for hits like Donkey Kong Country, Goldeneye 007, and Perfect Dark, brought their expertise to this fighting game, which boasts a roster of 10 unique fighters. Players can immerse themselves in various game modes, executing "hundreds of thousands of moves and killer Combos at your fingertips."

It's worth noting that both Rare and the Killer Instinct franchise are now under Microsoft's ownership, making Killer Instinct Gold another Xbox Game Studios title available on the Switch. Since the release of the Xbox One launch title Killer Instinct in 2013, there has been no official word from Microsoft about plans for a new sequel.

Nintendo Switch Online is a subscription-based online gaming service designed for the Nintendo Switch platform. Subscribers enjoy online multiplayer functionality, enabling them to compete or collaborate with friends. The service also includes an extensive library of classic Nintendo games covering four decades, from the NES and SNES to Game Boy, Nintendo 64, and soon, the new GameCube libraries with the upcoming launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. A complimentary seven-day trial is available for those interested in testing the service.

Preorders for the Nintendo Switch 2 began at the end of April, maintaining a steady price of $449.99. The response was overwhelming, as expected. However, Nintendo has issued a warning to U.S. customers who pre-ordered through the My Nintendo Store, indicating that release date delivery cannot be guaranteed due to high demand. Despite this, Doug Bowser, the head of Nintendo of America, expressed confidence to IGN that the company will have sufficient units to meet consumer demand "through the holidays."
