"Leaked Trailer Reveals Canceled Powerpuff Girls Live-Action Series"

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 13,2025

A fascinating glimpse into what could have been has emerged from the depths of the internet, stirring up nostalgia and curiosity among fans of the beloved animated series, The Powerpuff Girls. In 2023, The CW made the tough decision to cancel their live-action adaptation of the show amidst various challenges. However, a recently leaked teaser video has given us a taste of the edgy, adult-oriented direction the series might have taken.

The unauthorized video, which surfaced briefly on the YouTube channel "Lost Media Busters" before being removed due to a copyright claim by Warner Bros. Entertainment, provided a three-and-a-half-minute look into the alternate universe where Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup have grown into troubled young adults. The trailer showcased Chloe Bennet as a stressed and burnt-out Blossom, Dove Cameron as a drinking Bubbles, and Yana Perrault as a rebellious Buttercup, who openly challenges gender norms.

The teaser dives into a dark plot where the trio accidentally kills a man named Mojo, prompting them to flee Townsville. Years later, they return to visit their father, Professor Utonium, portrayed by Donald Faison, only to find themselves confronting Mojo's vengeful son, Jojo, who has become the mayor and brainwashed the town's residents. The trailer's humor leans towards the edgy side, with references to juggalos and provocative jabs at the characters' dynamics.

The CW has acknowledged the authenticity of the footage to Variety but clarified that this trailer was not meant for public consumption. The live-action project faced numerous hurdles since its announcement in 2020, culminating in its cancellation in 2023 after a pilot that didn't meet expectations and the exit of Chloe Bennet from the cast.

Reflecting on the decision to cancel, CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz noted, “The reason you do pilots is because sometimes things miss, and this was just a miss. We believe in the cast completely. We believe in Diablo [Cody] and Heather [Regnier], the writers. We believe in the auspices of Greg Berlanti and Warner studios. In this case, the pilot didn’t work. But because we see there’s enough elements in there, we wanted to give it another shot. So that’s why we didn’t want to go forward with what we had. Tonally, it might’ve felt a little too campy. It didn’t feel as rooted in reality as it might’ve felt. But again, you learn things when you test things out. And so in this case, we felt, let’s take a step back and go back to the drawing board.”

This behind-the-scenes look at the scrapped Powerpuff Girls live-action series has certainly left fans wondering what might have been, had the project found its footing.
