Lucasfilm Animation VP Discusses Tales of the Underworld and Maul: Shadow Lord: 'An Upgrade'

If Star Wars Celebration Japan is any indication, fans are in for a treat with upcoming animated Star Wars projects. Athena Portillo, Vice President of Animation at Lucasfilm, shared exciting details in an exclusive interview with IGN about two highly anticipated shows: the newly announced *Tales of the Underworld* and *Maul: Shadow Lord* series.

Portillo expressed immense enthusiasm about collaborating with Sam Witwer, the iconic voice behind Darth Maul, on *Maul: Shadow Lord*. "Sam was deeply involved with the character's depth and lore, working closely with our head writer and supervising director," she told IGN at Star Wars Celebration Japan. "Together with Lucasfilm CCO Dave Filoni, who co-created the character in animation, Sam has been instrumental in shaping Maul's narrative through script readings, watching whip reels, and providing valuable input on the project."

Darth Maul's journey from a supporting villain to a Star Wars icon is set to be explored like never before. "We liken Maul to characters like Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees—seemingly unkillable and always returning," Portillo remarked. "In *Maul: Shadow Lord*, we delve into his history, exploring the stories that have made him such a compelling and enduring figure in the Star Wars universe."

Portillo emphasized the significant enhancements in Lucasfilm Animation's production process, highlighting advancements in "animation, lighting, effects, matte paintings, lighting concepts, and assets." She explained how Dave Filoni challenged the team post-Covid to step out of their comfort zones and strive for excellence. "Filoni encouraged us to create something that surpasses our previous work, from body mechanics and facial animations to updated body rigs and enhanced lighting," she noted. "After reviewing one of our episodes, Filoni remarked, 'Wow, you guys are actually creating cinema.' He's proud of what Lucasfilm Animation has accomplished with *Maul: Shadow Lord*."

Portillo also mentioned that *Maul: Shadow Lord* is an upgrade from previous projects like *The Bad Batch* and *Tales of the Underworld*, with the latter having just been completed. *Maul: Shadow Lord* is slated for release in 2026, while *Tales of the Underworld* is set to premiere on Disney+ on May 4, 2025.

*Tales of the Underworld* will explore the lives of Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane, each character featured in three episodes, totaling six. Ventress' storyline will focus on her resurrection by Mother Talzin and her subsequent journey with a young boy, resulting in a tale of two Jedi on the run. "Ventress' story delves into her relationship with Quinlan Vos, which has captivated fans, especially with the emotional connection fans have felt from Vos's declaration of love," Portillo shared. "It's a narrative that resonates deeply, touching on themes of love amidst the Jedi's supposed detachment."

Ventress' character arc also explores her grappling with her past and reevaluating her path. "After enduring much, characters often reflect on their journey and consider new directions," Portillo explained. "Ventress' encounter with a new character in the series offers a fresh perspective and a chance for redemption."

Both *Tales of the Underworld* and *Maul: Shadow Lord* promise to enrich the Star Wars universe with compelling narratives and advanced animation techniques. While *Tales of the Underworld* is set to launch on Disney+ in May 2025, fans eagerly await further details on the release date for *Maul: Shadow Lord*.
