Mario Kart's Free Roam: An Open World Adventure with Friends

Author:Kristen Update:May 07,2025

During today's Mario Kart World Direct, we were treated to an in-depth look at the game's exciting new Free Roam mode. This mode promises to be highly engaging, especially in multiplayer, and offers a fresh way to explore the expansive world of Mario Kart World.

PlayAlthough we had the chance to go hands-on with Mario Kart World last week, it wasn't until today that we got a comprehensive overview of Free Roam mode. This innovative feature allows players to freely navigate the vast, Forza Horizon-inspired world map of Mario Kart World. Unlike previous Mario Kart titles, where race tracks were isolated and only accessible during races, Mario Kart World integrates these tracks into an open world, enabling seamless transitions between tracks and exploration of the surrounding areas.

In Free Roam mode, when you're not competing in races, you can embark on mini-adventures. The world is filled with hidden collectibles such as coins and ? panels, though the exact benefits of collecting these items remain a mystery for now. Additionally, you'll encounter P-Switches that, when activated, trigger small challenges like collecting blue coins, adding an extra layer of fun and engagement.

Another highlight of Free Roam mode is the ability to enter Photo Mode at any time, allowing you to capture stunning images of your racers in various poses and settings. But Free Roam isn't just for solo adventurers; it's designed to be a social experience as well. You can explore the world with friends, take photos together, tackle challenges, or simply enjoy each other's company. Free Roam supports up to four players on the same system via split-screen, and up to eight players through local wireless play, with two players per system.

The Mario Kart World Direct also unveiled a range of other exciting features, including new characters, courses, and game modes. To stay updated on all the latest announcements, be sure to check out the full coverage right here.
