"Mastering Rune Slayer Fishing: A Beginner's Guide"

Author:Kristen Update:May 20,2025

If you had any doubt that *Rune Slayer* isn’t an MMORPG, here’s your proof: it has fishing. And as we all know, if a game has fishing, it’s officially an MMORPG. Kidding aside, you’re here to learn how fishing works in *Rune Slayer*, and we’re here to help. Yeah, we had trouble with this, too, but we eventually figured it out and are happy to tell you how to catch fish in *Rune Slayer*. Spoiler Alert: It definitely isn’t as intuitive as in *Fisch*.

Before you start reeling in the big ones, make sure to accept the fishing quest from Simon the Fisherman—the white-haired NPC you'll find at one of the piers where the Baracuda is swimming. Simon needs you to catch 5 "fish," and in return, he'll reward you with a Tackle Box (we’ll explain later why we use quotation marks around "fish").

Here’s the twist: to catch these fish, you'll need a fishing rod and some bait/tackle. Conveniently, Simon the Fisherman is your go-to guy for these essentials.

So, purchase a Wood Fishing Rod and some Worms from Simon. Most seasoned players suggest having at least 5 worms, but we opted for 10 to be on the safe side. Before you ask, no, you cannot equip the bait. The Worms simply need to be in your inventory; even though you don’t equip them, they're still used when you fish. Each time you catch something, one Worm is automatically removed from your inventory.

But here’s the catch: you won't be able to catch any fish unless you have at least 5 bait items in your inventory. We tried with just one Worm and came up empty-handed. It was only after stocking up to 5 Worms that we started catching aquatic lifeforms. We recommend placing the Worms in your hotbar to keep an easy eye on your supply. Once you're equipped with these, you're ready for the next step.

First, select your Wood Fishing Rod. Since you can’t equip it traditionally, just move it to your hotbar or access it from your inventory, and your character will hold it ready to fish.

Hold M1 to cast your line, ensuring it lands in a body of water—the pier next to Simon the Fisherman is a perfect spot.

Now, keep an eye on the bobber. When you see it make a ripple or two ripples, click M1 again to reel in your catch. That’s the basic gist of it.

Keep in mind, this method doesn’t guarantee a catch every time. Often, you won’t catch anything at all. Other times, you might pull up junk, but the good news is Simon will count junk as a catch (that’s why we used quotation marks around "fish" earlier).

So, the strategy is simple: cast your line, wait for the ripples, hit M1, and reel in anything five times. We managed to catch only two actual fish, while the rest were Old Cups.

Once you’ve caught 5 "fish," return to Simon the Fisherman to complete the quest. He'll hand over a Tackle Box. Select it to open it and store all your remaining worms inside. From now on, you won’t need to waste precious inventory space on fishing tackle.
