Universal Pictures has unveiled the first glimpse of Christopher Nolan's upcoming film The Odyssey, featuring Matt Damon in the lead role as Odysseus.

This marks Nolan's first project since the critically acclaimed 2023 biopic Oppenheimer and reimagines the timeless Ancient Greek epic poem, originally composed in the 8th or 7th century BC. The film is set to premiere on July 17, 2026.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Christopher Nolan’s next film ‘The Odyssey’ is a mythic action epic filmed across the globe using groundbreaking IMAX film technology. It brings Homer’s foundational tale to IMAX screens for the first time, hitting theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026.

The story chronicles Odysseus, King of Ithaca, enduring a decade-long voyage home following the Trojan War. While Universal hasn't shared additional specifics, industry reports suggest an all-star ensemble cast.

Matt Damon was initially reported to be in negotiations for the lead role, reuniting with Universal after the multi-Oscar-winning Oppenheimer, which secured seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director. Other rumored cast members include Charlize Theron, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, and Robert Pattinson.
