Michael J. Fox Hunts for Missing 'Back to the Future' Guitar

Author:Kristen Update:Nov 10,2025

Michael J. Fox and Gibson have officially begun their quest to locate the iconic guitar played by Marty McFly during the Enchantment Under the Sea dance in the classic film *Back to the Future*.

"We need your assistance in tracking down the guitar I used in *Back to the Future*," Fox said in a YouTube video appealing to fans. "It's lost somewhere in the space-time continuum, or perhaps sitting in a teamster's garage."

Gibson, the manufacturer of the Cherry Red ES-345 guitar featured in the 1985 blockbuster, also shared a "wanted" poster inquiring, "Have You Seen This Guitar?"

Co-stars Lea Thompson (Lorraine Baines-McFly) and Christopher Lloyd (Emmett Brown) joined Fox in urging fans to share any information through a dedicated website or a tip line. The video also featured Huey Lewis, whose music is famously part of the film.

The search for the missing instrument will be highlighted in an upcoming documentary produced by the company, titled *Lost to the Future*.

"We've been pursuing leads and rumors for a long time, but given the four decades that have passed, memories have naturally faded," the film’s director, Doc Crotzer, explained to *The Hollywood Reporter*. "We didn't have digital records or receipts back then. There are also conflicting accounts—almost as many rumors as there are people."

Gibson intentionally launched this search for the guitar, missing for 40 years, to coincide with the film’s 40th anniversary.

In related *Back to the Future* news, Bob Gale, a screenwriter for the Robert Zemeckis-directed trilogy, recently confirmed that there will "never" be another installment or spinoff.

Speculation grew after the creators of *Cobra Kai*, the sequel series to the *Karate Kid* films, discussed the possibility of a *Back to the Future* TV show.

However, Gale firmly stated that the franchise has no future.

"I'm not sure why this topic keeps coming up!" he told *People*. "Do they think repeating it will eventually convince us to proceed?"

"In every interview, people ask, 'When are we getting *Back to the Future 4*?' Never. 'A prequel?' Never. 'A spinoff?' Never. The series is great as it is. It may not be flawless, but as Bob Zemeckis often says, 'It's perfect enough.'"
