Core Boxes

Each core box of Monster Hunter World: The Board Game is a standalone experience, featuring four hunters and four monsters to challenge them. These boxes are designed to be combined, allowing for a mix of characters and monsters from different sets, enhancing replayability. While the majority of components are specific to each box, there are some shared elements and additional cards for use when combining sets.

Starting with a single core box is recommended for newcomers, and you can expand your collection with smaller expansions as you become more engaged with the game. If your passion grows, consider adding a second core set for even more variety.

The quality across core sets remains consistent, with the same engaging rules and high-quality production, including impressive monster miniatures that dwarf the hunters. The choice between sets should be based on aesthetic preference or nostalgia from the video game series.

This set takes you to a rugged badlands environment with rocky outcrops, desert, and swamp areas. The included monsters are the Barroth, Jyurados, Pukei-Pukei, and Diablos, while the hunters use more exotic weapons like the Charge Blade, Switch Axe, Heavy Bowgun, and Insect Glaive.

Retail Expansions

Expansions for Monster Hunter World: The Board Game were initially available during the Kickstarter campaign, with most still accessible at retail. However, the Nergigante and Teostra expansions are more challenging to find, with the latter being exclusive to Steamforged Games.

The Elder Dragons—Nergigante, Kushala Daora, and Teostra—introduce a new monster type and additional quests, along with a challenging five-star difficulty level. Their larger miniatures add a thrilling boss fight to your campaign.

While these expansions are enticing, they are pricey and often specific to one core set or the other. For example, some crafting options in the Kushala Daora expansion are tailored to hunters from different core boxes. Therefore, purchasing a second core set might be the best way to expand your game before diving into these expansions.

Following the success of the original lineup, Steamforged Games launched a Kickstarter for Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. This new iteration maintains the core mechanics but introduces fresh concepts, making it partially compatible with the original sets for arena games but not for campaign continuity.

The Iceborne core box, Hoarfrost Reach, includes four new monsters and hunters, with additional Elder Dragons and a Hunter's Arsenal expansion. Instead of a second core box, three monster expansions—Absolute Power, Seething Anger, and Overpowering Hunger—each containing four new monsters, are available. Additional content was unlocked during the campaign.

Although the Kickstarter has concluded, you can still order items from the Iceborne range via Gamefound, allowing you to continue expanding your Monster Hunter World: The Board Game experience.
