Monster Hunter Wilds: Unveiling the Oilwell Basin and its Fiery Inhabitants

An exclusive interview with directors Yuya Tokuda and Kaname Fujioka reveals a new location and formidable monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds. Prepare to explore the unique Oilwell Basin and face its fearsome ruler, the Nu Udra.

Delving into the Oilwell Basin

Unlike the series' typical horizontally expansive maps, the Oilwell Basin boasts a vertical structure. Fujioka explains, "We had two horizontally broad locales...so we decided to make the Oilwell Basin a vertically connected place. The deeper you go, the more magma-filled and hot it gets." The upper levels feature oil-like swamps, transitioning to a volcanic environment deeper down.

Tokuda adds that the Basin transforms during the "Plenty" event, resembling an underwater volcano ecosystem. This design draws inspiration from Monster Hunter World's Coral Highlands. The environment, while seemingly barren, teems with unique creatures adapted to its harsh conditions.

Nu Udra: The Black Flame

The Oilwell Basin's apex predator is the Nu Udra, a massive, octopus-like monster with a flammable, slimy body. Its tentacles ensnare prey before unleashing fiery attacks. Fujioka explains the design inspiration: "I’ve always wanted to add a tentacled creature...we thought of taking a normally aquatic creature and modifying them." The demonic aesthetic, complemented by its battle music, adds to its intimidating presence. Flash bombs are ineffective against it, as it relies on touch rather than sight.

Additional Oilwell Basin Inhabitants

The Nu Udra isn't alone. The Ajarakan, a fiery, monkey-like monster, utilizes martial arts-inspired attacks. The Rompopolo, a globular creature with needle-like teeth, employs toxic gases. Its design was inspired by a mad scientist, resulting in surprisingly "cute" equipment drops.
