Mortal Kombat 2: First Look at Karl Urban's Johnny Cage

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 17,2025

Get ready to face off with a new challenger! Karl Urban, known for his roles in The Boys and Judge Dredd, is stepping into the fighting arena as Johnny Cage in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2. Ed Boon, co-creator of the iconic franchise, unveiled a poster showcasing Urban's portrayal, cleverly designed as a faux movie poster for a Johnny Cage film, complete with the over-the-top action we've come to expect.

Mortal Kombat 2 serves as a direct sequel to the 2021 reboot, picking up where Lewis Tan's Cole Young, Hiroyuki Sanada's Scorpion, and Joe Taslim's Sub-Zero left off. Joining Urban in the expanded cast are Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, promising a fresh wave of iconic characters.

While plot details remain under wraps, the vast lore of the Mortal Kombat video games provides a wealth of potential storylines for this highly anticipated sequel. The first film focused on Cole Young's introduction to the Mortal Kombat tournament and the bitter rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

Unlike its predecessor, which premiered on HBO Max due to the pandemic, Mortal Kombat 2 is set for a theatrical release on October 24, 2025. Our review of the first film awarded it a 7, praising its "spectacular display of blood, guts, and effects-heavy martial arts battles."
