MultiVersus Shuts Down After Season 5 Ends in May

Author:Kristen Update:May 13,2025

Player First Games has announced that MultiVersus Season 5 will mark the end of the Warner Bros. platform fighting game, with the final curtain falling on May 30, 2025, at 9 a.m. PST. The studio shared this news through a detailed blog post on their website, signaling the end of support for the crossover brawler that first hit the scene on May 28 of the previous year. Season 5 is set to kick off next week on February 4 and will run its course until the game's closure. At that point, online play will cease, though Player First assures fans that all earned and purchased content will remain accessible offline via local gameplay and training modes.

In a heartfelt message, the MultiVersus team expressed their gratitude: “Most importantly, we want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supported MultiVersus. All of us on the Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games teams have poured our heart and soul into this game. We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey.”

Player First has also ceased real-money transactions for MultiVersus as of today. However, fans can still utilize Gleamium and character tokens to access in-game content until the support ends on May 30. At that time, MultiVersus will be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store.

The decision to end MultiVersus comes after Warner Bros. Discovery labeled the project a major disappointment. During a financial call in November, the company revealed that MultiVersus fell significantly short of expectations, leading to a $100 million writedown in its games sector. This added to the total of $300 million in losses following the launch of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in January. Additionally, last week, Variety reported that Warner Bros. Games head David Haddad would be stepping down after a challenging 2024.

"We took another $100 million plus impairment due to the underperforming releases, primarily MultiVersus this quarter, bringing total writedown year-to-date to over $300 million in our games business, a key factor in this year’s studio profit decline,” stated chief financial officer Gunnar Wiedenfels during the November call.

Although the news means the free-to-play Warner Bros. fighting game will close just days after its one-year anniversary, Season 5 promises to go out with a bang. Alongside the usual seasonal updates, new characters Lola Bunny and Aquaman will join the fray. Lola Bunny will be unlockable as a daily calendar reward, while Aquaman will be available through the battle pass, both starting next week.
