NCSoft Cancels Development of Horizon MMO

NCSoft's Cancellation of Horizon MMORPG Project "H"

News outlet MTN reported on January 13, 2025, that NCSoft had canceled several projects, including a Horizon MMORPG internally codenamed "H," following a company-wide feasibility review. This decision follows the departure of key developers from NCSoft. The company also reportedly canceled projects codenamed "J," while "Pantera" (or "Raising Lineage") remains under review. Projects "H" and "J" have been removed from NCSoft's organizational chart.

While neither Sony nor NCSoft have issued official statements, the cancellation of "Project H" raises questions about its future. It remains uncertain whether another publisher or development team will acquire the project's assets and continue development.

The Future of Horizon Multiplayer Remains Bright

Separately, Guerrilla Games continues development on a distinct Horizon online multiplayer game, referred to as the "Online Project." This project, announced on December 16, 2022, via a Twitter(X) post, will feature a new cast of characters and a unique visual style.

Job postings from November 2023 and January 2025 suggest a large-scale project. A Senior Combat Designer position highlighted the creation of challenging machine enemies for multiple players, while a Senior Platform Engineer role indicated a target player base of over one million. This points to a significant online multiplayer experience.

Sony's Partnership with NCSoft and Future Implications

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced a strategic global partnership with NCSoft on November 28, 2023. This collaboration aims to leverage NCSoft's technological expertise and SIE's global reach to expand into new gaming markets. While the Horizon MMORPG was canceled, this partnership could lead to other Sony titles appearing on mobile platforms.
