Nick Frost on HBO's Hagrid Role: Not Replacing Robbie

Author:Kristen Update:Jan 14,2026

Nick Frost has shared his initial thoughts on portraying Hagrid in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter television series, stating he feels a responsibility to bring something new to the role rather than simply imitate previous performances.

The star of *Hot Fuzz* and the live-action *How to Train Your Dragon* revealed he has started pre-production work for his turn as the beloved Hogwarts groundskeeper. He's already considering how to make his version distinct while remaining faithful to the character fans know and love.

"I'm deeply respectful of Robbie Coltrane's incredible performance that came before me, but I'm not going to try to *be* Robbie," Frost explained to Collider.

"I aim to do something not necessarily 'different,'" he continued, "but I believe you must honor the source material while finding room for subtle, personal choices."

The late Robbie Coltrane played Hagrid in all eight Harry Potter films and was reportedly a key inspiration for the character in J.K. Rowling's original books.

Frost is now set to portray Hagrid for the next decade, as the series plans to adapt each novel into its own season.

"I've had the chance to visit some sets, and they're growing a Hagrid beard," Frost separately told ScreenRant. It remains unclear if this refers to a prosthetic being crafted for him or someone literally growing a beard to be used as a prop.

Last month, the three young actors cast in the series' leading roles were announced: newcomers Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

"As a father myself, I will be very protective of these children," Frost said of the trio. "I think that's a core part of Hagrid's relationship with them—he is fiercely protective. I genuinely can't wait to explore that."

Other confirmed cast members include John Lithgow (*Conclave, Dexter*) in the pivotal role of Albus Dumbledore, and Paapa Essiedu (*I May Destroy You, Black Mirror*) as Severus Snape.

Janet McTeer (*Me Before You, The Menu*) will play Minerva McGonagall, Luke Thallon (*The Favourite, Present Laughter*) is Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse (*The Fast Show, Alice Through the Looking Glass*) will portray the long-suffering caretaker Argus Filch.

"I've always read Hagrid as a kind of lost, lovable, occasionally violent, funny, and warm-hearted child," Frost concluded. "The beauty of adapting one book per season is the opportunity to explore that depth much more. I can't wait. He's funny! I want to capture his humor, cheekiness, fear, protectiveness, and childlike wonder. That's the plan."

The Harry Potter TV series is scheduled to begin filming its first season this year, with a planned debut on HBO in early 2027.
