Nintendo Says It's Taking 'All Possible Measures' to Beat Switch 2 Scalpers

Author:Kristen Update:Feb 20,2025

Nintendo is prepared to combat Switch 2 launch shortages and scalpers, stating, "We are making preparations." This follows recent financial reports and addresses concerns about repeating the original Switch's 2017 launch shortages.

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, in an interview with Nikkei (translated by VGC), emphasized the company's proactive approach: "We will take all possible measures based on the experience we have accumulated to date (regarding scalpers and the like). We are making preparations." These preparations, according to previous statements, heavily involve producing a sufficient number of Switch 2 consoles to meet anticipated demand. This is considered the most effective strategy to counter scalpers.

Furukawa reiterated this commitment, stating that resolving component shortages experienced in previous years has enabled them to focus on sufficient production. Additional measures are also under consideration, within legal and regulatory boundaries.

A Switch 2 Direct is scheduled for April 2nd, promising further details. Global hands-on events will also be held.

Addressing declining Switch sales, Furukawa downplayed the impact of consumers waiting for the Switch 2, describing the Switch's eighth year as "solid," though not meeting targets. Nintendo intends to continue supporting the original Switch "as long as there is demand," with Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond slated for 2025 release.
