Nintendo Switch 2 Accessory Prices Rise, Fans React to Increased Costs

Nintendo has officially announced the pre-order date and pricing for the much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 console and its array of accessories. While the price of the console itself remains steady, there's been a notable shift in the cost of the accessories, sparking discussions among early adopters about their pre-order intentions.

The base model of the Nintendo Switch 2 will be priced at $449.99, with the bundle including Mario Kart World set at $499.99. Mario Kart World continues to be available as a standalone purchase for $79.99, and the new title, Donkey Kong Bananza, comes in at $69.99.

However, the accessory prices have seen an increase across the board. Here's a detailed breakdown:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller - $84.99
  • Joy-Con 2 Pair - $94.99
  • Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip - $39.99
  • Joy-Con 2 Strap - $13.99
  • Joy-Con 2 Wheel Set - $24.99
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Camera - $54.99
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Dock Set - $119.99
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector - $39.99
  • Nintendo Switch 2 All-In-One Carrying Case - $84.99
  • Nintendo Switch 2 AC Adapter - $34.99

In their announcement on the official Nintendo site, the company stated that these "price adjustments" for Switch 2 accessories are due to "changes in market conditions." For major items such as the Joy-Con 2 Pair, the Switch 2 Pro Controller, and the camera, there's a consistent $5 increase. Meanwhile, the Switch 2 Dock Set saw a $10 price hike, moving from $109.99 to $119.99.

Fans have been vocal about the new pricing, especially the cost of an additional pair of Joy-Cons, which now falls just short of $100. This has left many prospective buyers surprised and reconsidering their accessory purchases.

However, amidst the pricing concerns, there's a silver lining: many Switch 1 accessories remain compatible with the Switch 2. Nintendo's support site confirms that original Joy-Con controllers and the Nintendo Switch 1 Pro controller can be used with the new console. While the original Joy-Cons cannot be physically attached to the Switch 2, both can be paired wirelessly. Additionally, controllers like the Super Nintendo and N64 can still be used with compatible games.

Social media platforms are abuzz with discussions about this compatibility, with many users considering sticking with their existing Switch 1 accessories or exploring third-party options. While these alternatives might not offer all the features of the Switch 2 controllers, such as the C-button or the ability to wake up the console, the savings could be significant for some buyers.

Nintendo also cautioned in their announcement that "other adjustments to the price of any Nintendo product are also possible in the future depending on market conditions." This statement offers a bit of reassurance for those who find the current prices steep, knowing that they can still use their existing Pro controllers with the Switch 2.

Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 will commence on April 24, 2025, giving fans ample time to plan their purchases and consider their accessory needs in light of these new developments.
