Hori’s Piranha Plant camera for the Nintendo Switch 2 comes with a resolution of just 480p, which is significantly lower than the 1080p offered by Nintendo’s official Switch 2 camera. This detail was officially confirmed by the UK My Nintendo Store.

Although the Piranha Plant camera is officially licensed by Nintendo and is more affordable than Nintendo’s $49.99 camera, its lower resolution has been a point of discussion. Both cameras are set to be released alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5. Users can also opt for the Nintendo Switch 2 camera accessory or any compatible USB-C camera for their Switch 2.

The Piranha Plant camera offers unique functionality; the part housing the webcam can detach from the pot, allowing you to place it directly on top of the Switch 2 for enhanced portability—a feature absent in Nintendo’s camera. Additionally, you can close the plant’s mouth to cover the lens.

The gaming community expressed surprise and amusement at the 480p resolution of the Piranha Plant camera. On Reddit, user Ramen536Pie questioned, "How do you even make a 480p camera in 2025? That must be harder to do than a 1080p camera." LizardsoftheGhost humorously suggested, "Maybe they meant to release this back when the Wii U came out." Meanwhile, pokemonfitness1420 wondered if such a low resolution was "a crime nowadays."

During the recent Nintendo Direct, Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2's GameChat functionality, which can be activated by pressing the C button on the new Joy-Con. This feature allows players to watch each other playing the same or different games, and with the aid of a camera, even see one another. The built-in microphone is designed to work reliably across various gaming environments. The C button's chat menu is poised to become a comprehensive multiplayer feature, potentially marking Nintendo's most significant online initiative in decades.
