Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Super Smash Bros., reacted enthusiastically to the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement, fueling speculation about a new installment in the popular fighting game franchise. Sakurai shared the Japanese announcement of the April 2nd Switch 2 reveal with a simple, excited "Ooh!" While this could be general excitement, fans are interpreting it as a potential hint at a new Super Smash Bros. title.

While the "Ooh!" alone is not definitive proof, several subtle clues have emerged suggesting Sakurai's involvement in a new project. His 2022 YouTube channel, which concluded with a promise of future game development, hinted at an upcoming reveal.

Although no official announcement has been made, the immense success of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (over 35.88 million copies sold) and Nintendo's history of releasing a new Smash Bros. title for each console generation strongly suggest a Switch 2 iteration is highly probable. Sakurai himself previously expressed uncertainty about surpassing the scope of Ultimate, which already boasts a diverse roster including characters from franchises like Final Fantasy VII, Kingdom Hearts, Persona 5, and Minecraft. However, the anticipation remains high.
