Osmos is back on Google Play with a brand-new port after a brief absence

Author:Kristen Update:Dec 31,2024

The acclaimed cell-absorbing puzzle game, Osmos, returns to Android! Previously removed due to playability issues stemming from outdated porting technology, developer Hemisphere Games has resurrected it with a completely revamped version.

For those unfamiliar, Osmos is a unique, award-winning physics-based puzzle where you absorb smaller organisms while avoiding becoming someone else's meal. Its simple yet engaging gameplay made it a hit, but Android users were left in the dark for years after its 2010 release.

Now, a brand-new, modern Android port is finally available on Google Play! Experience this micro-organic battle royale optimized for current Android operating systems.

Hemisphere Games explains in a blog post that the original Android version, developed with Apportable, became impossible to update after Apportable's closure. The game was subsequently removed from the Play Store due to incompatibility with modern (64-bit) Android devices. This new release rectifies that, offering a fully rebuilt and playable experience.

If you need further convincing, watch the gameplay trailer above. Osmos' innovative mechanics have clearly influenced many subsequent games, and its absence from the early days of social media is a missed opportunity – it would undoubtedly be a TikTok sensation today.

Osmos is a nostalgic gem, well worth revisiting. It represents a bygone era of mobile gaming innovation, a time many hope to see again.
