How to Parry Attacks in Avowed

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 19,2025

Few things are as satisfying in an action RPG as perfectly parrying an enemy attack, turning their aggression into a swift counter-offensive. If that's the kind of *Avowed* experience you crave, here's how to master the art of the parry.

How to Unlock Parry in Avowed

To parry in Avowed, you'll need to unlock the ability first. Head to the menu, select "Abilities," then the "Ranger" tab. You'll find Parry in the top middle column. Unlocking it requires spending an Ability point in any of the three core skill trees. Once that's done, Parry is yours!

Parry has three ranks, detailed below:

RankPlayer Level RequirementLevel Description
1N/A (1 Point Spent)Unlocks Parry.
2Player Level 5Increases Parry efficiency by 25%, dealing greater Stun on successful parries.
3Player Level 8Increases Parry efficiency by 50%, dealing greater Stun on successful parries.

At level 10, you can unlock "Arrow Deflection," allowing you to parry projectiles like arrows.

Parrying requires precise timing; block just before an enemy's attack connects. A metallic clang and a visual cue confirm a successful parry, stunning your opponent. Mastering the timing takes practice, but it's significantly easier than in games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.

Parrying Isn't Always an Option

Not all attacks are parryable. Attacks indicated by a red circle require dodging. Similarly, only certain weapons can parry: single-handed, two-handed weapons (not in your off-hand), and shields (in your off-hand). Ranged weapons (guns, wands, bows) and grimoires cannot parry.

What Parrying Does (and Why You Should Use It)

Parrying stuns attackers, creating an opening for significant damage. It's a fantastic defensive and offensive tool, particularly for melee characters. However, its effectiveness diminishes for ranged builds. Fortunately, respeccing in Avowed is easy, allowing you to adjust your skills as needed.
