New Patent Confirms Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Features

Author:Kristen Update:May 14,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 is generating buzz, and while we await official confirmation, the spotlight is on the innovative changes to the Joy-Cons, as revealed by recent patents.

Reports suggest that the Switch 2 Joy-Cons will feature magnetic attachments, a significant shift from the current design. This change is now virtually confirmed through a series of patents filed by Nintendo, which describe the new attachment mechanism and introduce an intriguing mouse-like functionality.

According to the patent, "This game controller is detachably mounted to a body device that has a recess, that comprises a first magnet and a second magnet at the bottom of the recess, and that can execute game processing." This indicates a seamless and secure connection facilitated by magnets.

The patent further elaborates on the detachment process, stating, "The first button and the second button are provided in the longitudinal direction in the top surface of the protrusion. The first button and the second button are to be pressed by a user. The first button is attracted to the first magnet by a magnetic force. The second button is attracted to the second magnet by a magnetic force." This dual-button mechanism ensures the Joy-Cons are securely fastened until intentionally removed.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect is the potential for the Joy-Cons to function like a computer mouse. The patent includes illustrations showing players using the Joy-Cons in a mouse-like manner, with the shoulder buttons (R1 and R2) acting as left and right mouse buttons, and possible scrolling functions via the joysticks. These illustrations depict various configurations, including dual mouse setups or using one Joy-Con as a mouse and the other as a traditional controller.

The magnetic attachment feature was among the earliest leaks about the Switch 2, while the mouse-like functionality surfaced later and has yet to be officially confirmed. However, a teaser released in January hinted at this feature, showing Joy-Cons gliding across a surface in a mouse-like motion.
