PlayStation Stars Program Ends After Three Years

Author:Kristen Update:Jun 14,2025

Sony has officially confirmed the discontinuation of its PlayStation Stars loyalty program, just under three years after its initial launch. The program will no longer accept new members as of today, and players who decide to leave the program will not be able to rejoin, with all accumulated reward points permanently deleted upon cancellation.

Existing members, however, can continue earning points until July 23, 2025, and retain the ability to redeem their remaining balance until November 3, 2026. This phased wind-down allows current participants a generous window to make use of their accrued rewards.

Digital Collectibles Remain Available

Despite the official end of the PlayStation Stars program, Sony has clarified that Digital Collectibles—such as the popular 3D Jim Ryan bobblehead—will remain accessible for the foreseeable future. This means users can still view and interact with their virtual collectibles even after the program concludes.

Official Statement from PlayStation

In a blog post announcing the change, Grace Chen, vice president of network advertising, loyalty, and licensed merchandise at PlayStation, explained the decision:

"Since launching the program, we've learned a lot from evaluating the types of activities our players respond best to, and as a company, we are always evolving with player and industry trends. Through this evaluation, we have decided to refocus our efforts and will be winding down the current version of PlayStation Stars. We will continue to evaluate our key findings from this program and are looking into ways to build upon these learnings."

No direct replacement for PlayStation Stars was announced, and Sony has not yet disclosed what specific insights were gathered during the program’s operation.

The History of PlayStation Stars

PlayStation Stars launched in July 2022 as a dedicated loyalty program for PS5 owners, offering reward points with real cash value based on purchases made through the PlayStation Store, as well as completing tasks such as trying out games, using system features, or participating in surveys. It was designed as a competitor to Microsoft's Xbox Rewards program.

Over time, both programs underwent changes that reduced their overall profitability for users. PlayStation Stars experienced a month-long outage last summer due to backend service issues. Then, in October 2024, Sony introduced several modifications, including shortening the point expiration period from 24 months to 12, and removing PlayStation Plus subscriptions from the list of eligible purchases. Now, the entire initiative is being phased out entirely.
