"Pokémon Anime Ages Up Main Cast After Nearly 30 Years"

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 14,2025

After 26 years of thrilling adventures in the Pokémon anime, Ash Ketchum, the beloved protagonist who remained perpetually 10 years old, has finally bid farewell to the series. However, The Pokémon Company seems poised to break new ground with Pokémon Horizons by allowing its new protagonists, Liko and Roy, to grow up.

Recent revelations from the CoroCoro magazine about the upcoming arc, Mega Voltage, have confirmed a significant "time skip" that will age Liko and Roy by about three years. Accompanying this development are new designs for the main cast, showcasing Liko, Roy, and Dot as taller and more mature characters:

This means that, off-screen, Ash and his friends, including Misty, Brock, May, Dawn, and Serena, have also aged three years. While it's uncertain if we'll see an older Ash in this arc or future seasons, fans are buzzing with speculation about potential appearances.

The Mega Voltage arc will also reintroduce Mega Evolutions, aligning with the return of this mechanic in the upcoming game, Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Notable evolutions include Liko's Floragato transforming into Meowscarada and Roy's acquisition of a shiny Mega Lucario.

One intriguing detail from the reveal is the absence of Friede, the captain of the Rising Volt Tacklers. His partner, Pikachu, is shown wearing Friede's goggles, which appear to be cracked, hinting at a troubling event that may have befallen Friede.

The Mega Voltage arc is set to premiere in Japan on April 11, though viewers in the United States will have to wait longer due to the lag in the English dub. Our review of Pokémon Horizons Season 2 gave it a 5/10, critiquing its reluctance to fully embrace its potential. With the introduction of a time skip, there's hope that the Rising Volt Tacklers will gain a fresh surge of energy and direction.
