Pokémon enthusiasts anticipating announcements regarding Switch 2 Pokémon titles during the upcoming Pokémon Presents on February 27th may be disappointed. While the Pokémon franchise has a long-standing relationship with Nintendo hardware, its debut on the Switch 2 appears to be further off than initially anticipated.
Although Nintendo hasn't officially unveiled the Switch 2, confirmation of its existence, backward compatibility with the original Switch, Nintendo account carryover, and a planned reveal within the current fiscal year have been made. Details beyond this, however, are based on leaks suggesting a more powerful, larger iteration of the original Switch.
While future Pokémon games will undoubtedly grace the Switch 2, reports indicate that the February 27th Pokémon Presents will focus on titles developed for the original Switch. Thanks to backward compatibility, these games will also be playable on the new console.
Focus on Existing and Upcoming Switch Titles
The upcoming Pokémon Presents will likely showcase updates for ongoing live-service titles like Pokémon GO and Pokémon Trading Card Game Live. Significant attention is expected to be given to Pokémon Legends: Z-A, slated for release on the original Switch this year. While a teaser trailer revealed a Lumiose City setting, returning Pokémon, and the return of Mega Evolutions, much remains undisclosed. Speculation also points towards another main series Pokémon game launching this year, separate from Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Generation 10.
Potential candidates for this rumored title include Pokémon Black and White remakes or a new Let's Go installment. Leaks suggest these, too, will be released for the original Switch, further implying that Generation 10 titles will likely be the first major Pokémon releases exclusive to the Switch 2.
This strategy aligns with the franchise's history of prioritizing platforms with larger install bases. Similar to the release of Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 for the original DS instead of the 3DS, history might be repeating itself.
Until official confirmation, Pokémon fans will have to tune into the February 27th Pokémon Presents for definitive answers.
