The Pokémon Company has confirmed it currently has no plans to include Pokémon TCG Pocket in its competitive circuit. This article explores the reasons behind this decision and what the future might hold for the game's competitive prospects.
In a recent interview with VGC (February 25, 2025), Chris Brown, Director of eSports at The Pokémon Company, stated that while they continuously evaluate potential additions to their competitive scene, Pokémon TCG Pocket isn't currently on the roster. He lightheartedly mentioned Pokémon Sleep as another example of a title not currently considered for competitive play, clarifying that, for now, there are no plans for Pokémon TCG Pocket to join the competitive circuit.
While no official reasons have been given, fan speculation points to the game's relative youth (only four months old with two sets released since its October 2024 launch) and ongoing balancing issues. Although Pokémon TCG Pocket includes competitive features, players have voiced concerns about balance inconsistencies. The game's simplified mechanics, designed for a more beginner-friendly experience, may also contribute to its exclusion from the competitive scene, which prioritizes a higher level of strategic depth.
Despite this, the Pokémon Competitive Circuit remains robust, featuring Pokémon TCG, Pokémon GO, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and Pokémon Unite, all set to be showcased at the upcoming Pokémon World Championships in Anaheim, California, August 2025. The upcoming Pokémon Presents could unveil a new set for Pokémon TCG Pocket, following the release of Space Time Smackdown on January 30, 2025. While the event's agenda remains undisclosed, many fans anticipate significant announcements. Additionally, updates on Pokémon Legends: Z-A (previously slated for a 2025 release) and recently announced Mega Evolutions are highly anticipated. The Pokémon Presents livestream will air February 27, 2025, at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET on YouTube and Twitch. Learn more about Pokémon Day 2025 on our dedicated event page.
