Preserving Profits: A Comparison of Stardew Jars and Kegs

Author:Kristen Update:Feb 02,2025

This Stardew Valley guide compares Kegs and Preserves Jars, two crucial tools for transforming crops into valuable artisan goods. While both offer profit, their efficiency and production differ significantly.

Kegs vs. Preserves Jars: A Head-to-Head Comparison

Keg Preserves Jar

Updated January 8, 2025: This guide reflects the 1.6 update, including expanded ingredient options for both Kegs and Preserves Jars (Leeks, Spring Onions, Hazelnuts, Winter Roots, etc.).

Basics: Both Kegs and Preserves Jars create artisan goods, significantly boosting profit, especially with the Artisan profession (+40% sell price). Input item quality doesn't affect output quality or price. Use lower-quality items for maximum efficiency.

Preserves Jars:

Preserves Jar

Produce Jellies, Pickles, Aged Roe, and Caviar. Obtained from Community Center bundles, Prize Machine, or crafted at Farming Level 4 (50 Wood, 40 Stone, 8 Coal).

Item In Jar Product Base Sell Price
Any fruit [fruit name] Jelly 2 x [base price] + 50
Any vegetable Pickled [item] 2 x [base price] + 50
Morel/Chanterelle etc. Pickled [item] 2 x [base price] + 50
Roe (except Sturgeon) Aged [fish] Roe 2 x [roe price]
Sturgeon Roe Caviar 2 x [roe price]

Kegs:

Produce Wine, Beer, Pale Ale, Mead, Coffee, Juice, Green Tea, and Vinegar. Obtained from Community Center bundles, Prize Machine, or crafted at Farming Level 8 (30 Wood, 1 Copper Bar, 1 Iron Bar, 1 Oak Resin).

Item In Keg Product Base Sell Price
Any fruit [fruit name] Wine 3 x [base price]
Any vegetable (except hops/wheat) [item name] Juice 2.25 x [base price]
Hops Pale Ale 300g
Wheat Beer 200g
Honey Mead 200g
Tea Leaves Green Tea 100g
Coffee Beans (5) Coffee 150g
Rice Vinegar 100g

Kegs or Preserves Jars: Which is Better?

Kegs: Generally yield higher profits (Wine > Jelly). Alcoholic products can be aged in Casks for further profit increase (Iridium quality doubles base price). However, Kegs are expensive to craft and have longer processing times. Consider cask aging costs and time investment.

Preserves Jars: Cheaper and faster production, ideal for early game and low-value, high-yield crops (e.g., Blueberries). Less profitable per item than Kegs, but faster turnover can offset this. Handles some items Kegs can't (Roe).

Conclusion: Both are valuable. Preserves Jars are excellent early-game tools, while Kegs offer superior long-term profitability but require a larger initial investment. A balanced approach, utilizing both, maximizes farm efficiency.
